The Sunday Sampler 2012 – Georgia Tech

Coach Bill Lazor needs to find more points from his offense.

The Virginia football team did not play well Saturday in a 56-20 loss at Georgia Tech. That’s an obvious statement. As coach Mike London said in the aftermath, “There are always things when you lose a game like this, you’re quick to point fingers, you’ve got to do this, you’ve got to teach that.” Certainly, a long list of issues could be compiled from the defeat: poor tackling, big plays allowed, no running game, inconsistent pass blocking, turnovers …

Overall, Saturday’s defensive debacle cannot be excused. The specialty nature of GT’s spread option offense potentially can explain some of the issues, though. The missed tackles, bad angles, and slow-looking players can all be attributed to a defense frozen in confusion. It’s something that happens to inexperienced players against Tech’s attack sometimes. Inexcusable, but it is not a warning sign just yet.
