The Sunday Sampler 2012 – TCU

Coach Jim Reid needs the defense to reel in some of the big plays.

The Cavaliers allowed another huge touchdown play against TCU on Saturday in a 27-7 loss. Horned Frog receiver Brandon Carter sprinted to a 68-yard touchdown reception that put the Hoos behind on the scoreboard in the first quarter and they trailed the rest of the way.

On the touchdown play, Virginia used its nickel package for a 3rd-and-10 play at TCU’s 32-yard line. The Horned Frogs countered with a four-receiver set that featured quarterback Casey Pachall in the shotgun with a single running back to his left. The formation with four wideouts led UVa’s defense to align two of its inside defenders – linebacker D.J. Hill on the right side of the defense and Dreqan Hoskey on the left side of the defense – over the slot receivers. Corners Demetrious Nicholson and Maurice Canady took the outside receiver on the right and left side, respectively. Middle linebacker Steve Greer is lined up directly on the ball about five yards back from the line of scrimmage; the ball is on the left hash marks. The two safeties, Anthony Harris and Brandon Phelps , are taking wide techniques and aligned directly behind the two slot defenders. Harris is behind Hill, while Phelps is behind Hoskey.
