Greg’s Grades And Trends: Maryland, Wake

Kevin Parks and the UVa running game is showing signs of improvement.

In what seems to be a habitual issue, the Cavaliers can’t seem to put all three elements of special teams, offense and defense together in one game. UVa has had one game this season where all three units received an above average grade, but Maryland was not it. The running game showed some life against a good Terp defense but the passing game continues to be ineffective and after starting off the year converting 43% of third downs in its first five games, Virginia has not averaged a 30% rate in the last two.

Defensively, the Hoos held Maryland to its season average of 20 points per game while limiting the turtle offense to a championship level 4.3 yards per play. In last week’s report I said I thought this would be a game where the Cavaliers could get some penetration and they did as the linebackers doubled their Tackle-For-Loss totals from 10.5 on the year to 15.5. Maryland converted just 2 of 13 third down chances.
