Summer Reading 2013: Quarterbacks

If you were writing about the Virginia football team’s quarterback situation shortly after the 2012 season in November, the article would have included Michael Rocco. If you were talking about the position shortly after the New Year, the conversation would have included QB coach Bill Lazor. If you were pondering the position shortly after the Cavaliers wrapped up spring practice in April, the thoughts would have included Phillip Sims .

For July’s Summer Reading series, however, none of those names are included as an offseason of change defined the quarterback position. First, Rocco announced his decision to transfer in early December. He landed at Richmond where he will sit out a year. At UVa, Rocco started 21 games over the last two seasons and he posted 4,731 passing yards to go with 27 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. That inconsistency and near 1-1 TD-INT ratio led to shared duties at QB in both seasons. Rocco split time with David Watford in 2011 and with Sims in 2012.

Sims, meanwhile, had a short stay in Charlottesville. He transferred to Virginia from Alabama last summer and received an NCAA hardship waiver that meant he did not have to sit for a season. Sims opened the year as the back-up quarterback behind Rocco, but found his way on the field early in the year. Eventually, with the Hoos’ scoring punch and record both in the mediocre category, Sims got a shot as the starter. He started four games by the end of the year. In the end, his one-year numbers were 1,426 passing yards with 9 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.
