University of Virginia coach Mike London announced Monday that David Watford has won the starting quarterback job for the football team. Almost immediately that led to reporters asking questions about his running ability and fans posting messages about his mobility. As Watford takes the reins, make sure mobility does not mean exclusively escapability.
In other words, Watford should not be categorized solely as a scrambler. He does have that talent – and he may need it depending on the offensive line’s progress from an up-and-down 2012 season – but his running skills can go beyond that. He possesses very good straight line speed and moves fluidly in space by covering a lot of ground with long strides. While Watford isn’t a wiggle wizard when it comes to lateral steps, jump cuts, or juke-and-go moves, he would fall on the plus side of average in those categories.
