Greg’s Grades & Trends: VMI, Pitt

Divante Walker and the Hoos hope to open ACC play with a win.

Saturday provided Cavalier faithful several reasons to be optimistic about the remainder of the season; the day also left questions to be answered entering into a critical part of the 2013 slate. The defense seems to be exceeding expectations while concerns remain with the offense and special teams.

There are two ways I define a good season. First, does the team win the toss-up games? Virginia has four in the next four weeks. These four weeks likely will write the history of the 2013 season. Second, does the club dominate lesser opponents – not just win, but overwhelm. Since 2008 Virginia has played six games against FCS schools, going 5-1 in those contests. UVa has outscored those opponents 39-11.3, while outgaining them 426 to 194. Not overwhelming but alright. What I liked about the Hoos’ 49-0 shutout of VMI is that while there are still several opportunities for improvement, Virginia dominated an opponent it should dominate and did so in roughly 29 minutes.
