For the first three years of his prep career, B.J. Stith was counted on as one of his team’s main options. He did well, helping Brunswick High School (Lawrenceville, VA) achieve three straight state championships. Stith transferred to nationally recognized Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA) for his senior season, a move the 6’5”, 205-pound shooting guard/small forward feels has benefitted him on and off the court.

“I definitely think it was the right move. Not just based on basketball, but the classroom too. At Oak Hill, playing in rotations, playing limited minutes helps me understand how it will be in college. More than likely I won’t be playing the whole game in college, but when I do get in I need to take advantage of the time I have,” Stith said. His transfer coincided with his father’s decision to leave his post as Brunswick head boys varsity basketball coach for an assistant coaching position at Old Dominion. BJ’s father, of course, is Virginia basketball legend Bryant Stith.

A 3-year starter at Brunswick, the University of Virginia-bound Stith has come off the bench for an Oak Hill team that features three other ACC-bound seniors in guard Shelton Mitchell (Wake Forest), guard/forward Caleb Martin (N.C. State) and guard/forward Cody Martin (N.C. State).

“From going to being the main man to a sixth man type of role, it was challenging to accept that at first,” Stith said. “I’ve noticed that, even though I’m not the main man, it just depends on how well you play your role. Every time I’m on the court, I try and take advantage of my opportunities.”
