Jones Flips To UVa (Updated)

Archbishop Carroll (Washington, D.C.) senior Cory Jones verbally committed to Toledo last month, spurning offers from Illinois, Old Dominion, and Virginia. The 6’3″, 220-pound defensive end/outside linebacker recruit began seriously reconsidering his decision this month, and ultimately the University of Virginia was the beneficiary.

“I kind of jumped the gun with Toledo and didn’t give other schools an opportunity. [Carroll head coach] Rick (Houchens) was saying to give Virginia a shot, to at least go see what they have to offer. I went unofficially at first (last Monday), and that made me want to go officially this (past) weekend,” said Jones, who verbally committed to the Cavaliers just hours after returning home from the official visit. He informed Toledo of his decision before making the call to head coach Mike London.

A number of factors influenced Jones’ decision. Virginia’s education impressed the Carroll star student-athlete, who carries a 3.8 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He felt good about the players and coaches as well.

“I liked the team chemistry and the coaches,” Jones said. “I feel like the coaches give me the best chance to develop and get better.”
