High school senior football recruits Christian Baumgardner, Tre Harbison and Matt Terrell have signed grant-in-aids with the University of Virginia. Cavalier head coach Mike London announced the news earlier today in this official release posted on VirginiaSports.com.
The three recruits plan on graduating from high school in December and enrolling on Grounds in January of 2016. A grant-in-aid is non-binding, though, so any of the three recruits could still head elsewhere if they choose.
Mid-year enrollment is nothing new for Virginia during the London era. Just last January, the Hoos welcomed offensive tackle Grant Polk and linebacker C.J. Stalker to the program.
Baumgardner is a 6’5″, 240-pound tight end prospect out of Ocean City, New Jersey. He is one of two tight end prospects in Virginia’s class of 2016, joining state of Virginia prospect Andrew Trainer. Virginia loses tight ends Charlie Hopkins and Rob Burns after this season but returns four scholarship players and adds Baumgardner and Trainer.
Harbison, who measures in at 5’11”, 210 pounds, is a tailback prospect out of Crest High School in Shelby, North Carolina. He rushed for 1,843 yards and 36 touchdowns while helping the Chargers to a state championship in 2014. Harbison joins Laderrien Wilson as the two running back commitments in UVa’s 2016 Class.
Terrell, a 6’4″, 225-pound prospect, is listed as a linebacker but could grow into a defensive end or play a hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker role. Terrell had 59 tackles including 17 tackles for loss with seven sacks his junior season, earning second-team all-VISAA honors for his performance.
