The Latest On UVA MBB’s Class Of 2016

ESPN.com released its revised class of 2016 rankings earlier this week. All four of Virginia’s recruits made the Top 100.

Kyle Guy, 4-star, No. 24 in ESPN’s Top 100
Ty Jerome, 4-star, No. 42
Jay Huff, 4-star, No. 71
De’Andre Hunter, 4-star, No. 82

Ty Jerome, a 6’5″ point guard out of Iona Prep (New Rochelle, N.Y.), is out for the season and scheduled to have the first of two hip surgeries on January 25. He’ll have surgery on his right and left hips on February 1. His goal is to be healthy and ready to play for UVA in the 2016/2017 season.

For more from Jerome, check out my EDGE update posted on January 15.

Here is the latest on how the rest of UVA’s class of 2016 recruits are performing in the 2015/2016 season.

KYLE GUY, Combo Guard, Lawrence Central (Indianapolis, IN)

Guy has yet to take the court since learning that he had been selected to play in the 2016 McDonald’s All-American Game. The last time Lawrence Central took the court was January 12, when the Bears fell to North Central, 54-53, in the first round of the Marion County tournament. Guy poured in 27 points — 21 in the first half — in the close loss to the 11-1 Panthers.

The future Hoo has averaged 24.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists this season, leading Lawrence Central to 12 wins and four losses. The Bears next take the court on January 22 at home against Warren Central. An away matchup against Fishers awaits on January 26.

JAY HUFF, Forward/Center, Voyager Academy (Durham, N.C.)

Voyager Academy has won four of its last five games and now sits at 16-4 on the year. Huff, who recently broke a backboard, had 28 points, a career high 20 rebounds, and five blocks in an 80-61 win over Roxboro Community on January 14.

On January 15, Voyager cruised to a 29-point win over Franklin Academy. Huff had 11 points in the win. The Vikings then lost to Panther Creek by four (68-64) before crushing Woods Charter, 88-42. The 6’11” Huff had 14 points, seven rebounds and seven blocks in the loss to Panther Creek and scored 20 points in the win over Woods Charter.

Voyager Academy’s remaining January schedule is as follows:

January 21 – River Mill Academy (Away)
January 22 – Cardinal Gibbons (Home)
January 26 – East Wake (Home)
January 29 – Raleigh Charter (Away)

DE’ANDRE HUNTER, Small Forward, Friends’ Central (Wynnewood, PA)

Hunter appears to have missed a January 12 win over Friends Select but returned for games against George School, Germantown Academy and Academy of the New Church. The 6’7″ senior scored 14 points in a 31-point victory over George School, had 29 points in a 20-point loss to Germantown Academy, and totaled 28 points, eight rebounds and four blocks in a one-point win over Academy of the New Church.

Through 20 games, Hunter has averaged around 23 points per contest while leading Friends’ Central to a 12-8 record. Here is the team’s remaining schedule in January.
