On Friday the first of three Live Evaluation periods began, providing Division 1 men’s basketball coaches an opportunity to watch prospects showcase their talents in person during AAU competitions.

UVA has been working the class of 2018 hard and will continue to do so this weekend while also evaluating younger prospects. We expect the focus of head coach Tony Bennett and company to be on rising senior prospects. After all, the class of 2018 remains of the highest importance for the Cavaliers.

The Nike EYBL in Hampton (VA), the Adidas Gauntlet in Dallas (TX), and the Under Armour Assocation 1 in New York are the “major” AAU events this weekend, though there are others. Coach Bennett was spotted in New York watching class of 2018 point guards Jahvon Quinerly, Prentiss Hubb, and Elijah Weaver, recruits at the top of the Virginia target board. He also saw wing Aaron Wiggins, a player UVA has been involved with, perform well.

This weekend will be about putting in time on these previously established recruits while forming more solid opinions on others and perhaps spotting new options as well.

TheSabre.com will be in Hampton Saturday and Sunday covering the EYBL. Stay tuned to the EDGE Board for notes throughout the weekend, EDGE recruiting articles, and more recaps and analysis early next week.

Combo guard Keldon Johnson (2018, Boo Williams), wing Brandon Slater (2018, Team Takeover), and forward Jalen Smith (2018, Team Takeover) are among those prospects in Hampton that UVA has offered and continues to be in hot pursuit of, and that have shown serious interest in the Hoos. Combo guard Michael Devoe (2018, Nike South Beach) and forward K.J. Hymes (2018, Las Vegas Prospects) are among those prospects who have claimed offers from Virginia but may not be getting the full court press from the coaches just yet. With quality performances this weekend, they could emerge as targets the staff begins to push for. There are certainly many others on our radar as well.
