Addressing what positional misses there may have been on defense in the class of 2017, Virginia football head coach Bronco Mendenhall lamented not finding his ideal nose tackle. He may have found what he was looking for in the class of 2018 in Samson Reed, a 6’3”, 250-pound defensive lineman out of Kahuku High School in Hawaii.

Reed, a consensus 3-star prospect, received a scholarship offer from Coach Mendenhall following UVA’s “Friday Night Lights” camp on June 9. On June 26, Reed announced his commitment to the University of Virginia, choosing the Hoos over offers from BYU, Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, UNLV and Washington State.

While he has the versatility to play defensive end or nose, Reed, who totaled 10 tackles for loss and six sacks his junior season, is being recruited by Virginia to play inside. As he mentions below, he’s just fine with that. He also looks forward to earning a potential business degree (though he’s open to other possibilities right now) at UVA, where he will enroll in the summer of 2018.

From family to new Cavalier defensive line coach Vic So’oto to UVA’s 3-4 defense, Reed addressed a variety of topics in a recent interview with TheSabre.
