Head Coach Tony Bennett, Five Virginia Players Earn 2018 ACC Accolades

Isaiah Wilkins is the 2018 ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its 2018 men’s basketball accolades on Sunday, and regular season champion Virginia is well represented.

Head coach Tony Bennett was named the 2018 ACC Coach of the Year after guiding the Wahoos to a 17-1 conference record. Virginia, which began the 2017/2018 campaign unranked before rising to become No. 1 team in the nation at regular season’s end, was picked to finish sixth in the conference in the preseason. Clemson’s Brad Brownell and NC State’s Kevin Keatts also received votes.

This is the third time Coach Bennett has been named ACC Coach of the Year. He previously received the honor in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

In addition to Bennett, five Cavalier players earned 2018 conference accolades. Senior forward Isaiah Wilkins made the All-Defensive Team and easily captured Defensive Player of the Year honors. Redshirt freshman De’Andre Hunter was the runaway winner for Sixth Man of the Year, receiving 39 of 57 votes, and also earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Hunter picked up one vote for Rookie of the Year.

Sophomore guard Kyle Guy was the lone Cavalier on the All-ACC First Team, which also included Duke’s Marvin Bagley III, Boston College guard Jerome Robinson, and UNC’s duo of Luke Maye and Joel Berry II. Redshirt senior Devon Hall earned All-ACC Second Team honors as well as All-Defensive Team honors. He picked up one vote for conference Player of the Year.

Cavalier sophomore point guard Ty Jerome earned All-ACC Third Team honors.

Bagley III was named ACC Player of the Year and ACC Rookie of the Year. Maye received the Most Improved Award.
