Virginia football has announced the commitment of defensive lineman Cassius Peat, a transfer from Scottsdale Community College (AZ). Peat, whose commitment was reported earlier in the week, plans to enroll this summer and will be able to play this season. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

The Corona del Sol (Chandler, AZ) graduate began his college career at Michigan State in 2015. After redshirting as a true freshman in 2015, Peat climbed to second-team defensive tackle on the Spartans depth chart following spring of 2016. However, he transferred to Pima Community College (Tuscon, AZ) in 2016 before heading to Scottsdale C.C. this past season, where he contributed four tackles in two games.

Peat’s father, Todd, is a former NFL offensive lineman. Older brother Andrus is currently an offensive lineman with the New Orleans Saints after starring at Stanford, while older brother Todd played defensive line for two years at Texas A&M-Commerce. Rivals, 247Sports and ESPN ranked the younger Peat as a 3-star prospect coming out of high school. 247Sports currently ranks him as a 3-star recruit, the No. 63 junior college prospect and the No. 4 junior college defensive end in the nation.

“Between health and injury concerns and the lack of experience, [the defensive line] is a unit that needed another competitive body on the roster after multiple players were lost from last season,” TheSabre.com Editor Kris Wright wrote as part of a “99 Virginia Football Thoughts Before Kickoff” series. “That’s where Peat fits in. At 6’3” and 275 pounds, Peat enters the picture as an older player that’s been through Power 5 football practices. He’s got enough talent to land on the MSU depth chart one offseason and his brother plays for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. Peat carried a 3-star rating out of high school. There’s a lot of potential there.”
