Catching Up With Prized Virginia Football Recruit Jowon Briggs

Preseason practice is underway at Walnut Hills High School (Cincinnati, OH), which features University of Virginia football commit Jowon Briggs. The 6’3”, 295-pound rising senior and his teammates are preparing for the regular season opener versus Lakota East on August 24.

Virginia fans know Briggs as Bronco Mendenhall’s most decorated recruit since he took over the program in December of 2015. Rivals lists the Walnut Hills star as the No. 57 overall recruit and the No. 2 defensive tackle in the nation in the class of 2019. 247Sports is high on Briggs as well, currently slotting him as the No. 109 overall rising junior and the No. 6 defensive tackle in the country in his class.

“I’ve been coaching high school football for 20 years. I would probably say he is the strongest kid I’ve ever had in the weight room,” Walnut Hills head coach Gerry Beauchamp said of Briggs.

“I’m not as familiar with [Virginia’s] defense, but Jowon is the type of kid that you can play him anywhere on the D-line and he’s going to make a difference,” Beauchamp added. “For us, he played mostly on the interior. Playing him inside gives the other team a better chance to double-team, so we put him out on the end as well. He was a nightmare for offensive tackles. Wherever the coaches there decide to put him, Jowon will figure it out and make an impact.”
