Virginia Basketball Commit Carson McCorkle Discusses Decision To Reclassify

Greensboro Day (Greensboro, N.C.) star guard Carson McCorkle revealed earlier this week that he is reclassifying from the class of 2021 to the class of 2020, which was his original graduating class when he began high school. The announcement came two days ago, but the decision had been made for some time.

“I really honestly decided before the season even started,” said McCorkle, who attended Broughton High School (Raleigh, N.C.) in 2016-17 before transferring to Greensboro Day the 2017-18 school year. He reclassified to 2021 that year. “I talked to [Greensboro Day head coach Freddy Johnson] and my parents and they agreed, but we felt like it was best to announce after the season, so I kind of just waited. I was kind of ready to make the announcement.”

McCorkle, who verbally committed to the University of Virginia last September, says Cavalier head coach Tony Bennett “wanted me in the 2020 Class as soon as he saw me.”

“When [Bennett] first started recruiting me, he kind of asked me what my thought process was on that,” McCorkle said, referring to reclassifying. “I told him I wanted to be 2020. He said that’s what they were thinking as well.”
