Kyle Guy Declares For The 2019 NBA Draft; Leaves Open Possibility Of Return

One day after Ty Jerome and De’Andre Hunter declared for the 2019 NBA Draft, University of Virginia junior guard Kyle Guy did the same.

It’s possible three of the four members of UVA’s big-time recruiting class of 2016, one that also included redshirt sophomore Jay Huff, may never suit up for the Cavaliers again. Certainly, neither Hunter nor Jerome are likely to return. Hunter is projected by most as a lottery pick, while Jerome, who declared on Monday that he is foregoing his final year at UVA, is projected by some as a late first-round selection.

Guy, however, may return to help the Hoos defend their national championship, acknowledging in the below tweet that he “will leave the option of coming back to school open.”

While the consensus second-team All-American is signing with an agent, new NCAA rules allow him the opportunity to return to school.

In this press release posted on VirginiaSports.com, Cavalier head coach Tony Bennett said: “Kyle is taking advantage of the new NCAA rules to make the best decision for himself and his family. He has had a terrific collegiate career and has been a pleasure to coach. We will work closely with Kyle throughout the process and support whatever decision he makes.”

The 6’2”, 175-pound Guy, Virginia’s all-time leader in 3-point shooting percentage (42.5%), was outstanding for the national champion Hoos this season. He led the team in scoring (15.4 PPG) on his way to earning first-team All-ACC and consensus second-team All-American honors. Guy came through on the game’s biggest stage as well, averaging 19.5 points per game in wins over Auburn and Texas Tech. With UVA down by two to Auburn in the national semifinals, Guy sank three free throws with 0.6 seconds remaining to give the Cavaliers the win. He would go on to be named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player following the title win over the Red Raiders.
