Virginia Basketball Recruiting Notes: Hausers Visiting, Juzang Decision Coming

Marquette transfers Sam and Joey Hauser reportedly are spending Thursday and Friday in Charlottesville on official visits at the University of Virginia. UVA is the second school to host the Stevens Point, Wisconsin natives since they announced on April 16 they were transferring. They have visited Wisconsin already and are scheduled to take an official visit to Michigan State next week.

Michigan State, Virginia and Wisconsin are the three finalists for the talented brothers, who surprised many with their decision to transfer from Marquette, which was projected by some as a top 10 team heading into the 2019-20 season.

Sam, a guard/forward who stands 6’8” and weighs 225 pounds, played three seasons for the Golden Eagles. He averaged 26.5 minutes per game as a freshman and 30.9 in his 3-year career. Hauser, who picked the Golden Eagles over Virginia coming out of Stevens Point Area High School (WI), averaged 14.1 points per game as a sophomore and 14.9 points per game as a junior. A terrific shooter, Sam made 44.5% of his 3s in his time at Marquette, including a whopping 48.7% from beyond the arc his sophomore campaign. He was 40.2% (88-of-219) from 3 last season, but he made 92.4% (73-of-79) of his free throws. Hauser pulled down 7.2 rebounds per contest last season and averaged 6 boards per game in his three seasons in Milwaukee.

Joey enrolled at Marquette in January of 2018 but redshirted due to an ankle injury. The 6’9”, 230-pound stretch-4 performed well as a redshirt freshman this past season, when he averaged 9.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game while playing 29.2 minutes per game. The younger Hauser started 31 of 34 games in his first season of high-major Division 1 basketball, made 45-of-106 from 3 (42.5%), and averaged 5.3 rebounds per contest.

Virginia offered a scholarship to both Hauser brothers out of high school. Only Sam, though, took an official visit to UVA.

Head coach Tony Bennett accepted a commitment from 6’5” JUCO All-American guard Tomas Woldetensae earlier this week, leaving him with two scholarships at his disposal for next season. The number increases to three if redshirt junior forward Mamadi Diakite decides to follow the same path as Kyle Guy, De’Andre Hunter, and Ty Jerome and stay in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Whatever school they pick, NCAA transfer rules dictate that Sam and Joey will have to sit out the 2019-20 season before becoming eligible in 2020-21. Sam would then have one year of eligibility remaining, while Joey would have two unless he can count the redshirt year at Marquette as a medical redshirt.

Juzang Decision Friday

Five-star guard Johnny Juzang will make his much-anticipated college decision on Friday, May 10. The Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) standout is expected to choose between Kansas, Kentucky, Oregon and Virginia, with the Wildcats and Cavaliers considered the favorites. The consensus as of this writing is that UK will be the choice.

UVA Makes Top Seven For Gonzaga’s Williams

Gonzaga College (Washington, D.C.) class of 2020 forward Terrance Williams revealed his top seven schools on Thursday. The finalists for the 6’7”, 215-pound junior are DePaul, Georgetown, NC State, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Stanford and Virginia.

Williams took official visits to UVA and Stanford last fall and traveled to Notre Dame for an official last weekend. The sweet-shooting prospect, who has eclipsed 1,000 points in his high school career, earned Washington Post All-Metro First-Team honors for his performance this past season.

Williams, who helped Gonzaga to the 2019 WCAC postseason tournament championship, is playing for the always talented Team Takeover (D.C.) AAU squad on the Nike EYBL circuit. He impressed in Atlanta the weekend of April 26-28, averaging 15.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Williams and Virginia-bound guard Casey Morsell were part of last year’s Takeover squad that captured the Peach Jam championship.

Off The Board

A pair of class of 2020 Virginia targets have come off the board this week. Paul VI (Fairfax, VA) point guard Jeremy Roach has committed to Duke, while Pennsylvania guard Ethan Morton pledged to Purdue. Virginia offered scholarships to both players but has not been a serious contender for either for some time.

  1. Don’t get caught-up in Hauser hype. Sam? Good shooter. Benefited from Markus Howard taking double-teams. Sam isn’t great at creating his own shot. Joey? Vastly overrated considering the hype outta HS. Slow. Turnover prone. Solid complimentary players? Definitely. Stars? Nope.
