University of Virginia men’s basketball head coach Tony Bennett announced on Tuesday (August 26) that forward Francesco Badocchi is leaving the men’s basketball team due to “personal reasons.” Badocchi, who is entering his third year on Grounds, will remain enrolled at UVA and intends on completing his bachelor’s degree.
“It is unfortunate that Frankie’s basketball career at UVA has ended prematurely,” Bennett said in the official press release, which you can read by clicking here. “We appreciate Frankie’s contributions to our program and wish him the best in the future.”
Badocchi, a native of Milan, Italy, signed with the Cavaliers out of Bishop Miege (Mission Viejo, KS) in the spring of 2017. He redshirted his true freshman campaign while recovering from surgery on his right kneecap. The 6’7”, 205-pound forward then missed the first seven games last season while on a medical leave of absence (reasons undisclosed). Badocchi was optimistic as of late March regarding his future in the program.
Badocchi’s departure means Virginia now has two available scholarships for the upcoming season as well as an available scholarship spot in the class of 2020, which previously was full. Here is the updated roster breakdown (scholarship players only) for the upcoming season:
Point Guards (1): Kihei Clark (Jr)
