Virginia Football Recruiting Notes: Cavaliers Make Top 10 For PA Defensive End

The University of Virginia football program has made the top 10 for a promising defensive line prospect. Meanwhile, an offensive line target from the Sunshine State is set to announce his top six schools.

Robert Jackson, a 6’6”, 250-pound defensive end out of Archbishop Wood (Warminster, PA), announced his top 10 this past Sunday (June 21). UVA, which offered the rising senior on June 9, made the list along with Arizona State, Cincinnati, Indiana, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple and Virginia Tech.

Jackson played organized football for the first time as a junior last season. What a first season it was, as he helped the Vikings to the PIAA Class 5A state championship. Penn Live listed Jackson, whose primary sport was basketball before 2019, as one of the hottest prospects in Pennsylvania this past April.

On the other side of the trenches, Venice (FL) class of 2021 offensive line prospect Ethan Mort is poised to whittle his list of schools to six. The 6’5”, 275-pound Mort is considering double-digit FBS scholarship offers, including one from Virginia.

Duke, Florida State, Indiana, Louisville, Minnesota, NC State, Vanderbilt and West Virginia are among the Power 5 programs that have offered. As discussed on TheSabre.com last week, UVA has one offensive line commitment in the class of 2021 but is in search of several more.

UVA Offers In-State Athlete

Briar Woods (Ashburn, VA) rising senior Christian Greene received a scholarship offer from Virginia last week. The 6’2”, 170-pound prospect plays quarterback for the Falcons but falls into the “athlete” category, though the Hoos may be eyeing him more specifically as a defensive back.

Greene, who attended Virginia’s home win over Liberty last November, verbally committed to Wake Forest on June 10.

UVA offered another Wake Forest commitment on June 9, when Jackson Memorial (Jackson, N.J.) running back Will Towns claimed a scholarship from the Hoos. The 5’11”, 190-pound rising senior has been committed to Wake Forest since May 30.

Penn State Nabs Virginia Tight End

Spotsylvania (VA) class of 2023 tight end prospect Mathias Barnwell is the latest top prospect from Virginia to verbally commit to Penn State. The 6’5”, 240-pound rising sophomore held offers from Duke, Maryland, Southern Cal, Tennessee, Virginia and Virginia Tech, among others, before pledging to the Nittany Lions on June 8.

When discussing which out-of-state schools have enjoyed the most success in recruiting Virginia in recent years, look no further than Penn State, which has signed 13 prospects from schools in the Commonwealth in the past four classes. Four prospects, including former UVA offensive line commit and Rivals 4-star prospect Jimmy Christ, signed with PSU in last year’s class.
