This Week In Recruiting: Virginia Football’s Peach State Prospects Enjoy Victorious Week

The University of Virginia football program boasts five commitments from the state of Georgia in the class of 2021. Three were in action last week, and all three helped their schools to victory.

Athens Academy (Athens, GA), which features UVA-bound defensive line prospect Hugh Laughlin, defeated Commerce by a score of 24-7. The Spartans improved to 2-0 on the season and are currently the no. 2 ranked team in Class A Private division according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The 6’6”, 285-pound Laughlin (#75 in the photo below) showed why he earned Power 5 scholarship offers on both sides of the ball. Virginia’s coaches have indicated he could play on either side, but the Cavaliers recruited him initially for defense.

Oconee County’s (Watkinsville, GA) early season success continued last week with a 24-7 win over Clarke Central. Virginia linebacker commit West Weeks racked up 6 solo tackles and 2 tackles for loss as OCHS improved to 3-0 on the season. The Warriors are rated no. 3 in Class 3A by the AJC.

Weeks and company resume play on October 2 following a bye this week.

Blessed Trinity Catholic (Roswell, GA) kicked off its 2020 season in style with a 38-14 rout of Eagles Landing Christian Academy. The No. 2-ranked (Class 5A) Titans include Virginia-bound senior Ty Furnish, a standout offensive lineman who also shows potential on the defensive side of the ball.

Neither running back Amaad Foston (John Milledge Academy in Milledgeville, Georgia) nor offensive lineman Charlie Patterson (Fellowship Christian in Roswell, Georgia) had games last week. Foston missed his school’s September 11 season opener due to an unspecified leg injury, but his coach left open the possibility of a return at some point this season.

While most state of Virginia varsity football programs are sidelined this fall, North Cross (Roanoke, VA) took the field for its season opener last week. UVA-bound linebacker James Jackson and his teammates cruised to a 69-0 win over the Virginia Spartans, a program comprised of homeschooled athletes.

The Georgia trio and Jackson were the only UVA class of 2021 commits in action last week. Some future Hoos begin their seasons this Friday, including Cy-Fair (Cypress, TX) tight end prospect Jack Witmer. Cy-Fair, which is scheduled to play Cypress Ranch on September 25, took on Pearland in a preseason scrimmage. Highlights of Witmer (#82) from the preseason contest are below, courtesy of Hudl.
