Reports: Virginia Football To Hire Taylor Lamb As Quarterbacks Coach

University of Virginia head football coach Tony Elliott has reportedly completed his full-time assistant coaching staff with the hiring of Taylor Lamb.

FootballScoop.com was the first to report the news. ESPN.com Senior College Football Writer Pete Thamel is reporting the news as well.

Lamb, described by FootballScoop.com as an “up-and-coming star coach,” reportedly will coach quarterbacks for the Hoos. He coached quarterbacks and served as offensive coordinator at Gardner-Webb this past season. Bulldogs quarterback Bailey Fisher completed 207-of-346 passes (59.8%) for 2,332 yards with 18 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2021, adding 187 net yards rushing and six rushing touchdowns on an offense that averaged 29.6 points and 395.6 yards per game.

Prior to Gardner-Webb, Lamb worked at the University of South Carolina as a graduate assistant in 2019-2020.

A star quarterback at Appalachian State, Lamb passed for 9.786 yards, rushed for 2,008 yards, and accounted for 113 touchdowns. He led the Mountaineers to 36 wins in his four seasons as the team’s starting quarterback. Taylor’s father, Bobby, played quarterback at Furman before embarking on a successful coaching career. Bobby served as Furman head football coach from 2002-2010, employing Tony Elliott as the team’s wide receivers coach from 2008-2010.

As of this writing, neither of Elliott’s final two full-time assistant coach hires – Lamb and Air Force defensive backs coach Curome Cox – have been officially announced. However, Cox shared the news on his Twitter account this past weekend.

With Lamb and Cox on board, Virginia’s 2022 coaching staff looks like this:

– Tony Elliott, Fralin Family Head Football Coach
– Des Kitchings, Offensive Coordinator
– Taylor Lamb, Quarterbacks (reported)
– Marques Hagans, Offensive Assistant
– Garett Tujague, Offensive Line
– John Rudzinski, Defensive Coordinator
– Curome Cox, Defensive Assistant (reported)
– Kevin Downing, Defensive Assistant
– Clint Sintim, Defensive Assistant
– Chris Slade, Defensive Assistant
– Keith Gaither, Defensive Assistant

FootballScoop.com reported that Gaither, who was officially announced as a defensive assistant, is now expected to move to offense, “likely working with the Cavaliers’ running backs.” Below is my projection on who will coach where.

– Des Kitchings, Offensive Coordinator/Running Backs
– Taylor Lamb, Quarterbacks
– Keith Gaither, Tight Ends/Special Teams
– Marques Hagans, Wide Receivers
– Garett Tujague, Offensive Line
– John Rudzinski, Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs
– Curome Cox, Defensive Backs/Special Teams
– Kevin Downing, Defensive Line
– Clint Sintim, Linebackers
– Chris Slade, Outside Linebackers/Edge Rushers
