Virginia Football Receives Commitment From 3-Star DL Terrell Jones

Terrell Jones, a consensus 3-star defensive line prospect out of Hoover High School in Alabama, announced his verbal commitment to the University of Virginia Monday (January 24), one day after returning from his official visit in Charlottesville. The 6’5”, 255-pound senior is the second prospect to commit to the Hoos from a busy recruiting weekend, joining Georgetown graduate transfer offensive lineman Mac Hollensteiner.

“First off I wanna thank My lord and savior for waking me up everyday and allowing me to showcase what he has instilled in me, and I wanna thank my Mom for everything she has done for me and playing both roles in my life getting me to this point,” Jones wrote on Twitter. “Also I wanna thank my trainers Coach Mike and Coach Jared for believing in me and taking me in and steering me when the path wasn’t clear. And thank you Coach Elliott and Coach Downing and coach Sintim and [Coach] Slade and the whole UVA coaching staff for believing in me and giving me this amazing opportunity to play at a historical University! And Thank you Hoover High School for showing me what adversity and real coaching is…With that being said I am 1000% Committing to THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA!! Let’s go to work!! Go HOOS!!”

Jones chose UVA over scholarship offers from Army, Connecticut, Illinois, Memphis and Minnesota, among others. He originally committed to Illinois but reopened his recruitment on December 15, the first day of the Early Signing Period for the class of 2022. Virginia offered a scholarship on December 29.

Jones is currently the only defensive line recruit in Virginia’s 2022 Class. The Hoos held commitments from a pair of prospects, but they changed their minds following Bronco Mendenhall’s resignation.

In Jones, new Cavalier head coach Tony Elliott gets Alabama’s no. 63 overall senior and the no. 181 defensive lineman in the nation according to 247Sports. As a senior he totaled 30 tackles including four tackles for loss with three sacks, earning second-team all-state honors by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Hoover went undefeated during the 2021 regular season and reached the 2021 Class 7A state semifinals.
