Florida OL Dawson Alters Flips From Vanderbilt To Virginia

The University of Virginia football program kept rolling on the football recruiting front Tuesday (January 25), receiving a pledge from St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL) center Dawson Alters. The 6’2”, 270-pound Alters becomes the fifth high school senior prospect to commit to UVA in the past five days.

“Champions are forged,” Alter wrote on Twitter. He added, “Coach [Elliott], Coach 2j, and the entire staff have the vision and purpose to make us champions. I’m all in. LETS GOOOO!!!”

Alters had committed to Vanderbilt as a recruited walk-on. UVA came on strong in the past week, though, offering the standout senior a full scholarship and sending offensive line coach Garett Tujague for an in-person visit. Alters subsequently made an official visit on Grounds this past weekend. Tuesday morning, he announced he was “ending my commitment to Vanderbilt to pursue another opportunity.”

The “opportunity” proved to be UVA. He will be able to make it official by signing a letter of intent with the Hoos on Wednesday, February 2, which is the start of the Regular Signing Period for Division 1 football.

247 Sports ranks Alters as a 3-star prospect, the no. 144 interior offensive line prospect in the nation in his class, and the no. 279 overall senior in Florida. The standout center capped off his high school career by earning second-team all-county honors, helping St. Thomas Aquinas to a third straight state title, and playing in the 2022 Under Armour All-American game.

Virginia football now boasts 14 verbal commitments in the 2022 Class, including four offensive line pledges. All four offensive line recruits have committed in the past five days. Cavalier running back signee Xavier Brown indicated in this tweet that another commit could be coming soon, so stay tuned.
