TheSabre.com Fan Friday: Jake Gelof, UVA’s Home Run King

Virginia baseball star Jake Gelof took over the top spot in the UVA record book this week when he launched the 38th home run of his career over the wall. A recent hot streak pushed him into the lead as he has 5 home runs in his last 5 games.

Gelof’s 38 home runs that set the record (he added one more since) got the highlight reel treatment from the Hoos.

The record-breaking shot came against Richmond on Tuesday. He surpassed E.J. Anderson (1995-98) for the program record on this swing.

Fans shared some of their favorites from the list this week on the baseball message board:

  • The 9th inning 2 out 2 strike comeback against Maryland, hands down! – zeeoldhoo
  • HR #1, in the 2021 ACC Tournament, 3-run shot vs. Notre Dame starter John Michael Bertrand. The sign of (many) things to come. And more than I can count that he hit off the roof of that poor, innocent building in center field at Davenport. – MonsterTruck
  • Game 1 of the Super Regional against Dallas Baptist. Got to see it with my youngest son, and we happened to be sitting across the aisle from Andy Pettitte (who was there to watch his son who played for DBU). It was a great ballgame, and a bizarrely small crowd given the circumstances of two away teams playing a super. While we lost that particular game, we obviously came back to win the series. – Hoodlum
  • Zack and Jake, hitting homers in the same inning in SoCar regional against South Carolina. All 3 runs to win that game came from RBIs by Jake and Zack. – HOOfan_1

Gelof also made an ACC Network appearance for an interview on ACC PM this week. You can check that out here.
