The Virginia men’s basketball team didn’t have to go far for its latest recruiting win. Chance Mallory, at consensus top 100 guard in the class of 2025 from Charlottesville, made the call for the Cavaliers on Friday.
Mallory announced his choice on social media.

Mallory selected Virginia over offers from a long list of schools, including a final six of UVA, Virginia Tech, Miami, Clemson, Villanova, and Tennessee. The Hoos offered back the summer of 2023 and remained in the hunt when Mallory narrowed his options in June. A visit with the Wahoos this past weekend sealed the deal and the announcement followed.
The major recruiting services all have Mallory safely inside the top 100. Rivals currently lists him at No. 74 nationally and rising, while 247 Sports has him at No. 57. On3.com ranked him the highest at No. 48 in the country. He’s a 4-star recruit across the board.
A 5’9”, 170-pound point guard, Mallory brings a lot of scoring and playmaking ability into the fold. Last season at St. Anne’s-Belfield in Charlottesville, Mallory posted 26.0 points, 4.8 assists, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game while helping his team to a 26-4 record. The Saints lost in the VISAA Division 1 title game to Paul VI, but Mallory poured in 29 points, 5 rebounds. and 4 assists.
That state title game included 5-9 shooting from 3-point range that matched his season success. He knocked down 85 of 214 3’s for a 39.7% rate for STAB. He finished 187-324 on 2-point shots for 57.7%. Mallory also made 152 of 182 free throws for an 83.5% number at the line.
This commitment gives UVA at least one 4-star recruit in four straight recruiting classes. In 2022, Isaac McKneely, Isaac Traudt, and Leon Bond III all held that rating. The 2023 class included Blake Buchanan, Elijah Gertrude, and Christian Bliss as 4-star recruits. Virginia’s current freshman from the 2024 class includes Jacob Cofie as a 4-star prospect. The Hoos also brought in three transfers this offseason that carried 4-star ratings out of high school in Dai Dai Ames, TJ Power, and Jalen Warley. If the Virginia roster stays intact entering Mallory’s freshman year next fall, McKneely, Buchanan, Getrude, Bliss, Cofie, Ames, Power, and Mallory would all share 4-star status on the same team.
Mallory played for Team Thrill this past year on the AAU travel circuit. In seven games in the Under Armour Next events, he had 151 points (21.6), 30 assists (4.3), 24 rebounds (3.4), and 12 steals (1.7). He made 19 of 50 3-pointers (38.0%) and 36 of 40 free throws (90.0%).
