Onions! Double Order!

With No. 2 Virginia and No. 5 Duke locked in a two-point battle in the final minute Saturday, UVA sophomore guard Ty Jerome didn’t flinch. And 38 seconds later, the Hoos had their first win at Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1995.

Jerome calmly dribbled above the top of the key against the Blue Devils’ 2-3 zone, made a quick ball fake to his left, and then rose up for a deep 3-pointer with only eight seconds remaining on the shot clock. That dagger went through and the Cavaliers eventually put the victory away, 65-63.

Like player, like coach?

The long 3-pointer brought to mind a shot from Tony Bennett’s playing days. Bennett, as told in this article in The Roanoke Times during the 2016 NCAA Tournament, remembered that he hit a buzzer-beater against Butler on national television in 1992. As chance would have it, that shot came from just about the same spot on the floor and was also off the dribble. It didn’t include the ball fake like Jerome’s, but the ever competitive Bennett might joke that it also didn’t hit any rim like Jerome’s dagger at Duke.

With Bill Raftery on the call for CBS on Saturday, it seemed fitting to put the two shots side by side. Onions! Double order!

  1. Tony’s was a little cleaner. I think Ty’s caught a part of the back of the rim. Either way, pretty similar.

  2. Ty’s was longer – same distance from line but the line was closer in Coach’s day.
