Virginia Football Recruiting Week In Review: Jacob Rodriguez Shines In Season Opener

University of Virginia dual-threat quarterback commit Jacob Rodriguez impressed in the first game of his senior season, totaling 288 yards of offense and five touchdowns as Rider (Wichita Falls, TX) defeated Midland, 42-13, last Friday.

Rodriguez, one of two dual-threat quarterback prospects committed to the Hoos in the 2021 Class, completed 10 of 16 passes for 261 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. The 6’3”, 210-pound signal caller rushed only three times but accumulated 27 yards and one touchdown.

Fellow Texas native Jack Witmer, a 6’7”, 230-pound tight end prospect out of Cy-Fair (Cypress, TX), was victorious in his team’s 2020 debut as well. The future Hoo had at least three receptions as Cy-Fair downed Cypress Ranch, 13-10. Witmer posted highlights of his senior season opener on Hudl.

UVA’s recruits from the state of Georgia continue to enjoy success. Athens Academy (defensive line recruit Hugh Laughlin) improved to 3-0 after a 68-14 victory over Berkmar. Laughlin, a 6’6”, 285-pound senior, enjoyed UVA’s win over Duke as well, including the postgame victory tradition.

Offensive line commits Ty Furnish and Charlie Patterson helped Blessed Trinity (Roswell, GA) and Fellowship Christian (Roswell, GA) to wins, too. Blessed Trinity (2-0) has two consecutive bye week before its next game. Fellowship Christian improved to 3-0.

John Milledge (Milledgeville, GA) soundly defeated previously unbeaten Savannah Christian, 52-13, to improve to 2-0 on the season. UVA running back commit Amaad Foston remains sidelined for John Milledge because of an undisclosed leg injury suffered in the preseason.

Three-star cornerback prospect Micah Gaffney and Spanish Fort (AL) are 3-2 following last weekend’s 43-6 win over Baldwin Central.

UVA linebacker commit Langston Long played in his first regular season game of 2020. Christ School (Arden, N.C.) unfortunately dropped a 24-21 decision to Rabun Gap-Nacoochee, surrendering a late touchdown pass. Check out highlights of the future Hoo in action below, courtesy of Hudl.

2021 Recruiting News

Offensive linemen Jasper Lott (TCU) and Diego Pounds (North Carolina), and wide receiver Deion Colzie (Notre Dame) are class of 2021 prospects with Virginia offers who committed elsewhere this past week. Colzie listed UVA as a finalist in the months before pledging to the Fighting Irish.

Meanwhile, a former committed player UVA has been targeting is now open. York Comprehensive (York, S.C.) senior wide receiver DaShawn Brown announced last week that he has decommitted from Appalachian State.

Brown, a 6’1”, 170-pound senior, was offered by UVA this past July and received an official offer from the Hoos in August. UVA coaches continued their pursuit despite his initial pledge to Appalachian State, where he committed to on July 4.

Below are highlights of Brown from his junior season.
