Virginia Football Game At Maryland Moves To Friday Kickoff

The Virginia and Maryland football teams jointly announced on Tuesday that their 2023 game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 16 has been moved up one day to Friday, Sept. 15. Game time and TV information will follow at a later date.

The Cavaliers have not faced the Terrapins since the 2013 season. This year’s game is part of a home-and-home series between the teams. Maryland hosts this season in College Park, while UVA will host the 2024 game in Charlottesville. Other future non-conference games currently on the Virginia long-term plan are Coastal Carolina (2024, 2025), Notre Dame (2024, 2026, 2031, 2034, 2035), Richmond (2024, 2028), Norfolk State (2026), Indiana (2027, 2028), and Kansas (2030).

This year’s contest with Maryland is part of a challenging opening stretch for the Hoos. They face Tennessee in Nashville on Saturday, Sept. 2 to open the season. They then host James Madison on Saturday, Sept. 9 before heading to College Park for what is now a short turn-around to a Friday game against the Terps.

As long-time ACC opponents, Maryland leads the all-time series 44-32-2. The Terrapins won the last two meetings in 2012 and 2013 27-20 and 27-26. Virginia had won 4 of 5 meetings prior to that with victories in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011. Last season, Maryland finished 8-5 with a win against NC State in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. UVA went 3-7 in 2023.

Both Virginia and Maryland may have been amicable to a date change for the head-to-head matchup because the switch added an extra day in the week leading up to conference openers. For the Terrapins, that means an extra day of prep before traveling to Michigan State for its Big Ten opener on Saturday, Sept. 23.

For the Hoos, it may be even more important. Previously, they had a short week before the ACC opener with NC State, but now they get the normal one-week spacing with back-to-back Friday games instead. NCSU comes to Scott Stadium on Friday, Sept. 22. That is a contest that will feature former UVA coaches Robert Anae and Garett Tujague as well as quarterback Brennan Armstrong on the opposing sideline.
