As Virginia and Maryland prepared to meet on the football field this week, the old ACC rivalry already had some traction with fans this week. The two schools added to that with a big men’s basketball announcement too.
For the football teams, this is the second part of a home-and-home deal that saw UVA travel to College Park last season. The Terrapins won that meeting 42-14, but the matchup between the neighbors tracks back all the way to 1919 and they played for 57 straight years in the ACC. Saturday’s 8 p.m. primetime kickoff will be the 80th contest in the series.
With the rivalry rekindled, the two schools added a little fuel with a join announcement during the week. The Hoos and Terps will meet for four straight years in men’s basketball beginning next season (2025-2026). UVA hosts that first game and in 2027-2028, while Maryland will be the home team in 2026-2027 and 2028-2029.
“We are excited to announce a four-year series with Maryland,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett said. “Maryland and Virginia have a long basketball history and we’re excited to bring this series back to life,” Terrapin coach Kevin Willard said. Both were quoted in news releases.
Fans discussed all the Hoos vs. Terps news on the message boards this week. Here are some of the highlighted threads:
- Score predictions for Sat? I got 38-27 good guys.
- Expected attendance?
- We (simply) need to go 4-6 over the next 10 games to qualify for a bowl. Possible? … If we beat MD, I think this team could be onto something special this season, granted we stay healthy!
- “If we can’t beat Virginia we don’t deserve to go to a bowl.” – Tom Nugent (1962) Response – “Bye, Bye Gator Bowl!”
- Who on this board was in attendance … for the 1977 game at College Spark for the Pep Banned riff on Marvin Mandel at halftime?
- Who was at the [Terps]-Cavs game in Scott Stadium? When the [Terp] mascot approached CavMan and CavMan put his leg behind the [Terp], pushed him down on his shell, and it looked like [Terp] broke his arm pretty badly.
- Have people forgotten the rude Twerps?

So that’s the mood ahead of this weekend’s game with the Terps. What’s at stake? Virginia seeks its first 3-0 start since 2019 and for just the fourth time in the last 25 years. The Hoos are also after their straight game with 30+ points after getting there in back-to-back contests for the first time in the Tony Elliott era in last week’s 31-30 win at Wake Forest.
The game airs on the ACC Network at 8 p.m. and the ACC Huddle live show is on Grounds as a result. Broadcasts from O-Hill will occur from 11 a.m. to Noon and from 6:30 to 8. After the game, a live one-hour show follows recapping the days action.
In other words, it’s a fun fan weekend for a “True Blue” (wear blue) game at Scott Stadium.
