Virginia basketball fans continue to enjoy anything that comes along with winning a National Championship so that made Thursday’s NBA Draft a fun night. Three Hoos heard their name called with De’Andre Hunter and Ty Jerome going in the first round before Kyle Guy was selected in the second round.
Hunter came off the board at No. 4, the highest UVA draft pick since Ralph Sampson went No. 1 overall in 1983. Jerome joined him in the first round as the 24th overall pick, marking the first time in program history that two players were drafted in the first round. When Guy was selected 55th overall during the second round, it gave the Cavaliers three draft picks in the same year for the first time since 1987 (there were more than two rounds that year). After a series of trades are officially approved in July, Hunter will be with the Hawks, Jerome with the Suns, and Guy with the Kings.
The draft extended the ongoing reminiscing among Virginia fans, who continue to relish the basketball program’s historic year. That inspired some of the fan selections this week so it’s time for Fan Friday. Let’s go!
Take Of The Week
Message board poster Northern Wi Hoo Fan provided a post about how big of a night the NBA Draft was for the program. He wrote the following in this thread:
“Major night for the Cavalier men’s basketball program!
Draws for kids considering UVA: Great coaches. Great team and family atmosphere. Strength and conditioning program, Campus culture and a school where basketball is celebrated and cared for immensely. ACC dominance. National exposure and great competition week in and week out. Title holding program and now a pattern of players getting drafted.
Kids can and will go where they want to go, and the reasons are varied, but if all other things are equal, UVA can make a near impossible pitch to beat.
The winning formula this program has built is so strong and getting stronger. Tonight was a great night for the program. Let’s enjoy these days!!!”
