TheSabre.com Fan Friday: UVA Baseball Team, Fans Enjoying The Moment

It’s been an exciting week for the Virginia baseball team and its fans. The Cavaliers rallied through the loser’s bracket to win a dramatic Game 7 on Tuesday morning that sent them to the Super Region.

Playing in the only college baseball game on national TV on Tuesday plus the varying interviews and social media that have come since has created a fun atmosphere for the Hoos. Yes, that includes the hoopla with the Stephen Schoch Dippin’ Dots video. The Wahoos are enjoying the moment.

”It’s been pretty cool,” senior Logan Michaels said. ”When you’re teammates with guys like that and you see them all over the internet, you’re like wow they’re famous and just kind of joke around with them and stuff like that. I think everybody is pretty confident with where we are right now. We’re all having fun and we’re just playing loose. When you see stuff like that online, it just shows. I mean we’re just having a good time. We’re enjoying the moment, just enjoying where we are. I think that’s been a huge part for us is we’re all just enjoying it and taking it all in. I think that’s really been a big part of why we’ve been successful.”

”We’ve been talking about it as a team,” senior Alex Tappen said. ”We saw the interview first. That’s just Steve. That’s who he is. That’s his personality. That’s his nature. It’s all organic. Then it kind of happened like a whirlwind where all of the sudden, you’re scrolling through Twitter and you’re seeing video after video, interview after interview and I’m going to be completely honest, I never got sick and tired of that Dippin’ Dots interview. Every time it popped up on my feed, I watched it through and through. Everyone’s talking about him and that’s just Steve. That’s who he is. He’s definitely brought this team together, brought this team really close. He’s obviously the team comedian as you all figured out by now. It’s really awesome to have a guy like that on the team to loosen the atmosphere and keep everyone loose, keep everybody having fun.”

If you don’t know what the Dippin’ Dots reference means and somehow missed it all over social media. Here you go:

In the days since that interview became a viral sensation, Stephen Schoch has done more interviews and the team received an NCAA approved dessert of Dippin’ Dots. UVA coach Brian O’Connor admitted to having four bowls worth himself. Check it out:

Naturally, the baseball board has been hopping with the Hoos trying to make it back to Omaha. Here are a couple threads on the Wahoos.

There have also been a few interesting threads on the football and basketball boards this week. Football chatter around a possible playoff expansion created long threads here and here. On the basketball board, a thread on Trey Murphy III receiving an NBA Draft Combine invite is here.
