One of the more popular topics on the message boards of late has been related to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and its impact on Virginia. Obviously, fans have a lot of varying thoughts on the college sports landscape and how NIL fits into that.

Regardless of those thoughts, however, athletes are now able to take advantage of NIL opportunities. UVA basketball players have been among the most visible. That’s not surprising, of course, given the stature of that program and the 2019 National Championship.

A high profile deal came through for Reece Beekman and Kadin Shedrick recently. The duo signed an endorsement deal with Blue Ridge Bank to make appearances, voiceover radio spots, appear in print and digital advertising, and promote Blue Ridge Bank on social media.

“Supporting our community is a passion for Blue Ridge Bank. Reece and Kadin’s passion for the sport bring our community together and we are excited to align our brand with these two outstanding student-athletes,” Dan Moskowitz, Charlottesville Market President for Blue Ridge Bank, said in a news release. “We are proud to be the first community bank to partner with these athletes and this is another example of Blue Ridge Bank’s entrepreneurial spirit. This partnership will enable us to further connect and engage with our community across the Commonwealth.”

This particular deal funneled through Hook Sports Marketing, a local start-up business helping UVA athletes find opportunities in the NIL space. Several Virginia connections are involved with Hook, including Austin Katstra that formerly played for the men’s basketball team. Here is an NBC29 piece on the business as well as a UVA Today article about a recent body image seminar that some Cavalier women’s soccer players hosted through NIL opportunities. The seminar was free to attendees but sponsored by Boar’s Head and others.

Fans are always welcome to start discussions on the message boards. Check those out and take a look at our weekly fan picks below too.
