The Sabre Interviews: Carla Williams

Women’s sports teams at Virginia produced another strong year in 2021-2022. The Cavaliers captured their second straight National Championship in swimming and diving and secured Sweet 16 or better runs in tennis, golf, and soccer in addition to other conference titles and individual performances.

Even with success in competition, women often receive inadequate coverage of their achievements. Additionally, fans have to search harder to find information on their favorite women’s teams and athletes.

TheSabre.com contributor Doria Martingayle checked in with Virginia Director of Athletics Carla Williams to discuss media coverage of women’s sports, female student-athletes in the age of NIL, and more.

Doria Martingayle is a lifelong Wahoo fan who graduated from UVA in the fall of 2020. During her time on grounds, she was a member of the track and cross country teams. Doria graduated with distinction while majoring in media studies and minoring in Spanish. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in mass communication at Louisiana State University.
