Preferred Walk-Ons Podcast: To Those Left Behind

TheSabre.com introduced a new podcast partnership to be featured here on the site and through our social media channels. It’s time for Episode 10.

Hosted by two people named Michael – ACC fans by birth, degenerate gamblers for mirth – The Preferred Walk-Ons Podcast is a college sports podcast through the lens of the ACC. Michael McGraw is a University of Virginia graduate and fan, while Michael Shutt is a life-long NC State fan. Both grew up watching the ACC and have insights on the history and present of the conference … plus plenty of healthy ABC – (Anybody But Carolina) bias.

For this special episode, the podcast welcomed Sports Illustrated contributor and former NCAA magazine writer Brian Burnsed. Brian is a three-time Livingston Awards finalist and has written extensively about the intersection of sports and public health. The conversation includes:

  • His new piece on how NFL players are managing the fear of watching their colleagues die young (0:00-13:00)
  • How the game of football and its surrounding culture have evolved at all levels given an increased focus on player safety (13:00-30:16)
  • The rapidly evolving landscape of high school and college sports in the wake of the pandemic (30:16-51:28)
  • Some ACC basketball “Dudes to Remember” (51:28-1:00:09)

You can always email the show at [email protected]. You can also follow the show on Twitter or Instagram (@PWOPod). Make sure to give Brian a follow as well (@BrianBurnsed) and check out all his features on SI.
