TheSabre.com Fan Friday: College Football Rules Changes?

Virginia and its fellow ACC schools released football schedules late last month with the Hoos opening the season in Nashville against Tennessee on Saturday, Sept. 2. While that kickoff is only a little more than six months away, parts of the game could look different than what fans are used to seeing.

That’s because some college football rules changes are being considered “to reduce plays for both safety and game length reasons” according to reports from Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports. Proposals under consideration are clock rules:

  • Prohibiting consecutive timeouts called by teams
  • No longer adding an untimed down at the end of the first or third quarter if the quarter ends on a defensive penalty
  • Letting the clock continue to run after the offense gains a first down except inside the final 2 minutes of each half
  • Letting the clock continue to run after imcomplete passes

The proposed changes sparked a lot of conversation about college football fans. That included this thread on here The Sabre where posts suggested shortening halftime, reducing commercial lengths, and more. While the structure of the game, which will impact players and coaches, will be altered and potentially affect strategy, much of the message board conversation focused on the fan experience with the length of games.

A second thread on the football board addressed the fan experience at Scott Stadium. This is a common topic, of course, with suggestions ranging from seatbacks to a sound system upgrade.

While fans are gearing up for college football this fall with offseason chatter, the players have returned to workouts this winter. The Cavaliers open spring practice on March 14 with the Spring Game scheduled for April 15 at Scott Stadium. Here’s a quick social media video released by the program highlighting some of the strength and conditioning work:

Virginia coach Tony Elliott addressed the importance of these workouts with Virginia Sports TV:
