With the calendar now showing August, the start of the University of Virginia athletics year is now immediately on the horizon. Teams already have started practices with the first competitions of the season just days away. Who’s ready for the Hoos to be back on the field?

If you’re a fan that can’t wait to see UVA in action or if you’re thinking of matching this couple’s feat from last year, check out what’s up next for fall sports at Virginia. Note this doesn’t include spring sports that also compete at some events in the fall like tennis or golf.

Cross Country

Field Hockey

  • First game: Penn State, Friday, August 30, 4 p.m., @ University Park, Pennsylvania
  • First ACC game: California, Friday, Sept. 20, 5 p.m., @ UVA Turf Field

Football

Volleyball

  • First exhibition: JMU, Saturday, August 24, 6 p.m., Memorial Gymnasium
  • First game: Marist, Friday, August 30, 4:30 p.m., @ Norfolk/Quest For The Crown
  • First ACC game: Friday, Sept. 27, 7 p.m., @ Wake Forest

Looking back at last fall, the UVA men’s cross country team finished third at the ACC Championships and 22nd at the NCAA Championships. The Virginia women’s cross country team finished third at the ACC Championships and 15th at the NCAA Championships. In field hockey, the Hoos lost to North Carolina in the ACC Tournament Semfinals and at the NCAA Tournament Final Four.

For the soccer teams, the men’s program lost in penalty kicks in the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals and lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The women’s program missed the ACC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. The Virginia volleyball team also missed the postseason. Finally, the Cavaliers’ football team finished 3-9.
