TheSabre.com Fan Friday: Blue-White Scrimmages, Student Fans, And Bobbleheads

With the college sports year now in full swing, several pieces of news related to Virginia fans dropped this week.

First, as Wahoos everywhere eagerly count down the days until tipoff, the basketball programs announced the date for their annual Blue-White Scrimmages. Tony Bennett and Amaka Agugua-Hamilton will showcase their teams on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the John Paul Jones Arena. The UVA football game against Boston College is that day as well so the times for the Blue-White Scrimmages will be announced once kickoff time is known.

Speaking of the football team, the Cavaliers jumped out to a 1-0 start on the season with a 34-13 win against Richmond on Saturday. A two-hour plus weather delay challenged the path to victory, but he Hoos got the job done.

Before the rains came, an enthusiastic and energetic student crowd packed the stands and the hill. Eric Ward, Assistant Athletics Director For Marketing at UVA, announced that it represented the sixth highest student crowd in the last decade. The next chance for students to provide some noise and try to top that number comes next week when old rival Maryland comes to town for an 8 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Finally, memorabilia collectors received some fun news to cap off the week. On Friday, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum released an officially licensed Virginia Cavaliers CavMan Bobblehead. Part of a back-to-school collection, the collectible features CavMan holding up the No. 1 sign. The bobbleheads, available here for $35 plus $8 flat rate shipping, are expected to ship in December.

CavMan appeared in 1984 as a costumed Virginia Cavalier mascot so this marks the 40-year anniversary of that debut.

“We’re excited to unveil this new Virginia Cavaliers Bobblehead featuring CavMan in celebration of his 40th Anniversary and in conjunction with the start of the new school year,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said in a news release. “This bobblehead will be the perfect way for Virginia fans, alumni, students, faculty, and staff to show off their school pride!”
