Mizzell Sparks Bayside To Win, Playoff Berth

The “Week In Review” is a weekly feature. It’s a look at how UVa’s recruits are performing throughout the 2012 season. In case you missed anything, be sure to check out the bottom of this report for links to previous weeks. In the meantime, here is how last week played out for the Cavs’ recruits…

Zach Bradshaw, LB/WR, Damascus (MD)

The Hornets edged out a very good Seneca Valley squad, 14-13, to remain undefeated (9-0) in 2012.  Bradshaw finished with three catches for 19 yards.  On the season, he has 24 catches for 332 yards and eight total touchdowns.

Malcolm Cook, S/ATH, Fork Union Military Academy (VA)

Fork Union won a shootout with Benedictine, 39-30.  The Blue Devils are now 8-2.  Cook had 14 interceptions heading into last weekend.

Hipolito Corporan, CB, Westside (Houston, TX)

Westside got its fifth win of the season when it defeated Houston Math Science & Tech last week, 49-7.  Westside has three losses on the year.

Corwin “Turtle” Cutler, QB, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA)

Cutler completed 13 of 16 passes for 123 yards with three touchdowns and one interception as the Dolphins (9-0) downed Landstown, 41-0.

Jack English DT/TE, St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA)

St. Christopher’s lost a defensive battle to Doug Randolph-led Woodberry Forest, 13-6.  English recovered a blocked field goal for the Saints (5-5), who face Collegiate next week.

Kirk Garner, CB/WR, Andre Levrone Jr., WR, Brendan Marshall, QB, Good Counsel (Olney, MD)

Good Counsel cruised to a 30-0 win over O’Connell and improved to 8-1 on the year.  The Falcons travel to Carroll next week for the regular season finale.

Tim Harris, CB, Varina (VA)

Varina improved to 7-1 overall after a 44-0 shutout of Glen Allen.

Brad Henson Jr., OL, Monsignor Donovan (Toms River, N.J.)

Monsignor Donovan rebounded from a blowout loss to capture a 36-0 win over Central Regional.  The Griffins improve to 5-2 overall this season.  Highlights from last week’s win have been posted on Hudl.com (the direct link to where you can watch is here.  Henson, no. 75, plays right guard.).

Keeon Johnson, WR, A.L. Brown (Kannapolis, N.C.)

There was speculation last week that Keeon Johnson could miss the rest of the 2012 season with a toe injury.  But the UVa-bound receiver was back in action this past week, hauling in at least two passes for 72 yards in a 21-14 loss to Concord.  The Wonders finish the regular season with an 8-3 record.  They have clinched a playoff berth.

Zack Jones, WR, Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA)

Oscar Smith (8-1) defeated Southeastern District-rival Grassfield, 27-0.  Jones had three receptions for 38 yards and one touchdown for the Tigers.

Micah Kiser, LB, Gilman (Baltimore, MD)

Gilman defeated a talented Calvert Hall squad last Monday before finishing off the week with a 48-12 drubbing of rival McDonogh.  The Greyhounds (7-2) are winners of seven straight.

Jack McDonald, OL, Boston College High (Boston, MA)

BC High shutout Malden Catholic, 44-0.  The Eagles improve to 3-4 on the year.

Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, RB, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA)

Led by its 5-star tailback, Bayside rallied from a 7-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Cox, 34-27.  Mizzell had 30 yards rushing in the game’s first three quarters, but he finished with 159 yards rushing on 19 carries.  He added two catches for 95 yards and had three total touchdowns.  Check out the full game recap here.

The Marlins finish the regular season with an 8-2 overall record.  They have earned a playoff berth.

Sadiq Olanrewaju, OL, Salisbury School (CT)

Salisbury won a shootout with Brunswick, 47-35.  Chris Phelps’ team is 6-0.

LaChaston Smith, LB, South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.)

South Iredell (9-2, 6-1) clinched a share of the Catawba Valley Conference championship with last week’s 30-0 win over East Burke.  Smith, who plays running back in addition to linebacker, had a 2-yard touchdown run in the win.  The Vikings move on to the state playoffs.

Donta Wilkins, DT/OL, Potomac (Dumfries, VA)

Potomac, one of the hottest teams in Northern Virginia, captured its fourth straight victory when it defeated a quality Hylton squad in overtime, 27-21.  Potomac is now a perfect 5-0 in the Cardinal District and 6-3 overall.

InsideNova.com writes that Wilkins’ confidence has spread to his teammates this season.  Wilkins was also featured in a video on the Washington Post’s website last week.

Chris Nelson, DT, Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL), Class of 2014 recruit

Victory Christian beat Foundation Academy, 28-20, to improve to 3-5 on the season.
