The lacrosse training is now engaged in what is called the 8-hour phase. With new legislation in effect, we are allowed to spend up to four hours per week with the team practicing, watching film and reviewing schemes, with the other four hours committed to weight training and meetings. The addition of two extra hours for lacrosse-specific training has been a welcome addition, allowing us to do more with the team and enjoy some unique events, such as Monday’s combined women’s and men’s lacrosse practice. Julie Myers ’90 staff and our own created four stations at the beginning of the practice (defensive positioning, draws/faceoffs, shooting and stickwork) followed by four full-field scrimmages. With a cold downpour for the setting on the lower practice field and the outdoor football turf, it was a lot of fun and more productive than you might expect at first glance. We only have 6 more training dates with the team before we are required to shut the operations down December 1: the three months of Fall lacrosse this semester have been productive and energizing due to the ‘all-in’ commitment from the men.

November once again finds the men of Virginia Lacrosse operating the Will Barrow Flag Football Tournament. This year funds were raised for both the UVa suicide hotline and for a Harlem Lacrosse scholarship. Owen Van Arsdale ’14 arranged to have a team of Harlem boys travel to Charlottesville and join the weekend’s activities which included Beta Bridge receiving a fresh coat of paint (photo below). This event continues to inspire us for many reasons, especially with the reality that it is 100% organized by the student-athletes under the guidance this year of Cory Harris ’19. And a special thank you to Hannon Wright ’99 for sharing with the team the story of Will Barrow and discussing the realities and causes of suicide.

Most of the team is adorned with facial hair above our lips thanks to Dox Aitken ’20 promoting Headstrong’s Mustache Madness https://pledge.headstrong.org/team/194472
Up next? The men will be ringing the Salvation Army bell on the Corner once we return from Thanksgiving Break. Ryan Conrad ’19, the co-President of SACH, is scheduling both our team and the Student-Athletes Committed to Honor to man the kettle outside Mincers.

Bo Lori, our new volunteer assistant coach, has already made an impact on the program with his attention to the defensive end of the field and specifically the midfielders. Bo has also created a splash with his work that highlights the University of Virginia Lacrosse program’s career development objectives and summer internships and travels. Thank you to all of the alums and parents, especially Alison Parent, who have assisted our men with creating such rewarding pre-professional experiences.

It was great to see Shea Megale ‘21 highlighted in a recent edition of UVAToday. https://news.virginia.edu/content/novelist-shea-megale-adds-uva-chapter-her-own-extraordinary-story?utm_source=DailyReport&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=news Shea has already been up to our office, offering to assist our program – she will be out at practice later today. Shea is the daughter of Larry Megale ‘80, who took his share of faceoffs alongside Steve Kraus ‘81, and the niece of defenseman Kevin O’Shea ’80.

We will finally be saying goodbye to UHall in a few weeks. Our men will move into our temporary home named the Training Grounds the week after Thanksgiving. We will miss the confines of what has held UVa lacrosse teams for five decades. But the future of athletics at Virginia is a really exciting one. This semester’s unveiling of the Master Plan https://spark.adobe.com/page/mBBhq9Db4JIeb/ by our Athletics Director Carla Williams has provided our department a definitive direction, and one which we will be asking you to assist us in realizing. We will soon be sharing how you can support our lacrosse programs with this greatly-needed facility overhaul.
