US Soccer desperately needed a reset. Getting rid of Gulati was the first step although replacing him with his second in command was a red flag. Hiring Earnie Stewart as the GM showed some promise, but this coaching search has exposed US Soccer even more as a woefully inept and possibly corrupt organization.
How do you take that long to hire the guy everyone said you were going to hire six months ago? How, while taking that long, do you not even interview so many better qualified candidates? How could this be anything other than blatant nepotism given Earnie's friendship with Gregg and Jay Berhalter's position with USSF? And, all that aside, how do you end up with such a middling, unaccomplished coach for a team so badly in need of leadership and identiy? The whole thing is so so disappointing.
I will always root for the USMNT and USWNT. I have no choice (just like UVA football sadly). But I am pessimistic about how this turns out, and I would not be shocked if the USMNT misses out on the WC again given how other CONCACAF teams are improving while US Soccer is proving itself to be one of the most inept organizations in world soccer, which is truly saying something.
