FIFA's problem with changing offsides is that they would be admitting ...

they were wrong to make the NASL give up the 35-yard line. They actually threatened to expel the US if the NASL didn't stop using it. I agree with using something similar to lacrosse (4 players always in the defensive end, 3 players always in the offensive end). And if that's a bridge too far, how about not allowing any back passes that go over the midfield line, similar to lacrosse's "over and back" rule. If the ball crosses the midfield line, the whistle blows and it's a free kick for the defendsers at the spot it crossed.
