I can't see his system based approach working at the international level.

He did well in Columbus with his system based on possession and movement. However, unless you are Spain, that is tough to translate into success internationally.

1. A national team coach does not have the training time with the players that a club coach has. Are players going to understand their roles and responsibilities? Is there sufficient depth in the talent pool to have a high performing player for each position and role required for his system?

2. The individual skills of US players make it difficult to implement this system against more skilled teams. Can the US really play out from the back against France, Brazil, or Germany? Can they regain possession from Spain, Italy, or Croatia?

3. CONCACAF qualifying means playing on crappy pitches against scrappy teams. Will a possession based system work on a Wednesday night in Guatemala City or Port of Spain?

4. Other than Pusilic, the US does not have sufficient creative or finishing quality. Even if the US can win the possession battle and make teams chase, can they score goals against well organized defenses?

It seems to me that Berhalter wants to play the way that Klinsman wanted to play when he first got the job. Klinsman realized it wasn't working, so he tried to change up the system and style. That failed because Klinsman was not a good communicator, and US players do not have the nous to figure things out on their own, unlike the German national team or Bayern.

Berhalter is a better communicator, and he is used to coaching players into teams that are greater than the sum of their parts. I just have doubts about how much time he will have with the players to do those things effectively, and if it is not effective, how flexible he can be with his style to figure out Plan B or C.

I certainly wish him luck though. After a disastrous 2018, the USMNT program has nowhere to go but up.
