Raonic took a while to catch on as a pro

A lot of people say that turning pro was the obvious choice for him, but that is not even accurate in hindsight. If he had gone to college on a year-at-a-time basis, evaluating when he was ready to turn pro, he might have spent two years at UVa. In May of what would have been his first year at UVa, after a year on the Futures tour, his ranking was about #778. That does not indicate that he would have dominated the NCAA and gotten bored. He really started to take off in the following autumn/winter season, when he got his ranking up to #200 or so and could start entering Challenger tournaments.
