Interesting Podcast by SI/Tennis Channel about the new ITF entry system &

It’s implications. SI/Tennis Channel’s Jon Wertheim’s Podcast guest has had several kids play college tennis. One of his kids played for USC (at #6) during the Stevie Johnson ERA.

If you don’t want to listen to the whole thing, the college discussion starts about minute 23/24. You can also start about minute 18/19 and hear about the new pathway to becoming a pro.

His basic points:

Going to be considerably harder to become a pro
Basically have to be a top ITF junior to have a chance. Even then, you now really have only a year, until age 19,to either make it or not. Much more difficult now to be a late bloomer.

Trying to make it on tour with the new WC route is very, very hard. I think he said it took Stevie J. 7/8 tournaments to win his first pro match.

For anyone ranked above 700 or so, you probably are done as a pro.
For foreigners currently above 700, college tennis now makes a lot of sense, which means even less scholarship opportunities for American Juniors going forward, at least at the top echelon of college tennis.
