I'd go with Midtown

Easy to get to Buckhead and Downtown. Somewhere near Piedmont Park would be ideal. Lots of great restaurants and bars near there. Also close to the Botanical Gardens, which we love. If you stay downtown, just keep to the North or East of Centennial Park. The usual stuff in downtown is cool. If you are a college football fan, definitely check out the College Football HOF, it is right near Centennial Park and a very underrated attraction (surprisingly a lot of Hoo stuff in there). Tin Lizzy's for tacos is nearby and one of my favorite places in town. Five Points is cool but can get a little sketchy, better to visit there but not stay imo. The original Vortex is there, which is a great place if you don't mind the wait. Also a (short) trip out to Decatur to the Brick Store Pub is worth it.

Edit: you mentioned car seats, so you're bringing young children? The Vortex is 18 and over only so scratch that. Atlantic Station is pretty cool and often has kid friendly stuff.
