It's not that they don't want 5th years, it's that there is an evaluation

w/r/t the 5th year. “With Coach Mendenhall, you never know when your last play is going to be because you have to earn your fifth year.” Mendenhall verbalized that in the context of "earned not given", but it's pretty standard practice, there have been plenty of guys who don't end up with 5th years in the past here and elsewhere.

With Proctor it's odd because he was a talented starter at a position that from the outside doesn't look 100% stabilized. For whatever the reason, they wanted to move in a different direction and use Proctor's scholarship elsewhere. It doesn't seem like an attitude or talent issue, the best guess imo is they want a different type of skillset in a lineman there. Would love to hear more about that, what they're looking for and how that relates to Proctor, because he's being sought after as a grad transfer by top tier programs. UVa must feel pretty good about the position group if they thought they could afford it, doesn't totally add up from the fan perspective. Especially if they seek out a grad transfer OL.

5th year grad transfers has been about plugging holes in the depleted depth chart- QB, OL, DL. Ideally that's going to happen going forward as more of a luxury move, so far it's been a vital necessity.
