Don’t get too wrapped around watching a PK kick in practice from...

a kicking holder. Used to watch PKs at kicking camps blast 60-65 yards FGs continuously like it was nothing. Some of them never hit the field in college.

Does a PK have the requisite leg speed that doesn’t require him to adjust his mechanics from high school to college? Speed of the game in college forces many PKs to adjust, and in many cases, problems follow.

Can a PK adjust to the hash marks and narrower uprights? Typically, a PK is stronger from one side. The advanced PKs can kick with a fade or draw.

Will the PK be able to self-correct? Most often, the PK knows more about the fundamentals of kicking than his Special Teams coach. He will have to work through adjustments during the season. Can’t call up his personal trainer from home to meet every week to work through glitches that pop up. The more discipline a PK is with his mechanics, the better.

What’s the PK’s mental strength? Things can get into a PK’s head and impact him, just like a golfer, to disrupt mechanics. How does he adjust to wind, rain, cold weather, humid days, etc.?

Just a few things to consider. Personally, it’s my hope Hunter Pearson, a scholarship PK currently on the roster has corrected his mechanics to become more consistent. He’s 6-2/215, has a strong leg and already with a taste of the college game speed.
