Well, based on my time in NJ, I agree and disagree

I agree that it all felt somehow overblown compared to what I saw of those with close relatives in "the life" (mostly 20-somethings I knew at the time). However, if I just consider Meadow and her story lines, I would say that particular aspect wasn't obviously so inconsistent with what I observed.

The show did capture some of the workaday, realistic aspects of "the life:" in a given episode, you might have seen one of the captains hanging around at the landfill all day, making sure the trash truck drivers were working to keep the envelope full, or something like that. So they got a lot of the realistic stuff in there, but then they shoved 5 lifetimes worth of drama into a single character's 10 years.
