Best only played 10 seasons of top flight footie.

Many of the United teams he played on were not good. He played under 3-4 managers at United. He had won the Ballon d'Or, First Division title and European Cup by 22 years old. He quit United at 27. He never played in the European Championship or World Cup.

Ronaldo is certainly one of the GOATs. But he has played 7 years more of top flight footie by this point in his career. All of the clubs he has played for have been excellent during his time with them. Add to that his sizable reputation for his role in getting Portugal the European Championship in 2016 and advancing into knock out rounds in the WC. He has simply had significantly more opportunity to showcase himself on the world stage. Much of that is due to his unreal level of fitness and durability, so credit to him.

IMHO, Best burned brighter for the time he was at his peak, but he imploded sooner because of his disease. It is hard to compare him to Messi and C. Ronaldo because their careers have been so much longer. They have benefited from a much less physical game, better pitches, and better equipment. They are also due credit for better training, higher levels of fitness, better nutrition, and personal choices like not smoking or drinking (particularly during halftime).

I'll give you your entire list of GOATs (Pele, Messi, Cristiano, Cruyff, Maradona, Zidane) as a starting point for a team. I'll take Best, Beckenbauer, Platini, Di Stefano, Greaves and Matthaus. We can then trade picks from that point forward to get to 11. I like my chances. A lot.

If only we could have them all in their prime to play it out!
